California Chapters of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence Elect New State Council President

San Francisco, Calif. – Longtime gun violence prevention advocate and local chapter leader Peggy McCrum, of Long Beach, has been elected the new President of the California Chapters of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.  Ms. McCrum was elected by the 25 California Chapters of the Brady Campaign during its 12th annual conference where gun violence prevention leaders from around the state gathered to celebrate legislative successes and strategize for the upcoming year.  The conference is the largest gathering of the gun violence prevention leaders in the state.

Ms. McCrum’s family was dealt a shattering blow when her older brother, Robert Kelly, was robbed, shot and killed in 1982. In 2007, McCrum joined the Long Beach Chapter of the Brady Campaign and quickly became chapter president.  In that role, she led local efforts to promote state-level gun reform policies.   In 2010, she played an important role in demonstrations and other efforts to prohibit the open carry of guns in California.  In 2011, she was elected to the State Executive Committee of the California Chapters of the Brady Campaign, and later became the board's Vice President.  In 2013, Ms. McCrum represented the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, as an honored guest at the State of the Union Address by President Obama.

“Through my work with The Brady Campaign, I have come to know and deeply admire many gun violence prevention activists. The determination and commitment of these activists is the energy that keeps our organization moving forward in preventing senseless gun violence,” said Ms. McCrum in accepting the position as president of the California Chapters of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. “Dallas Stout showed great leadership over the past five years as president, leading our chapters in our efforts to pass strong gun reforms at the state level including the most recent new law that institutes a 'Gun Violence Restraining Order' to help stop senseless gun violence.”

“Every day we see 32 people murdered by guns and another 45 are shot or killed in unintentional shootings. There is more work to be done to protect Californians. I look forward to serving the Brady chapters,” added McCrum.
