Starkesia Reed was a 14 year old Honor student in the Chicago Public Schools with her whole life ahead of her.
She was NOT in the wrong place at the wrong time. She was waiting for her school bus one morning, eating an orange inside her own living room, looking out the window for her bus.
Down the block at the corner, a gunman armed with a fully automatic AK-47 military-style assault rifle spray fired at a gang member he was targeting. He missed the person he was firing at, and instead hit 7 houses.
One bullet powerfully went through the wall of the home Starkesia Reed lived in, and into her head, killing her instantly.
Starkesia’s devastated and close-knit family has devoted much time since then to trying to prevent this kind of violence from happening to others.
Denise Reed,a Sunday School Teacher, and mother of 8, now leads Purpose Over Pain (http://www.purposeoverpain.org) and is trying to get legislators to see that military style assault weapons should not be in civilian hands in this nation.
