Tell Congress To Fund CDC Research Into Gun Violence

Over 100 organizations representing health care providers consider the number of firearm injuries and related deaths that occur each day to be a serious public health epidemic. Yet research on firearms receives disproportionately low funding and has fewer publications compared to other top causes of death. Part of this is due to the Dickey Amendment which mandated "none of the funds made available for injury prevention and control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) may be used to advocate or promote gun control".

In both the House and Senate, bills have been introduced to repeal the Dickey amendment and authorize $50,000,000 between 2018 and 2023 for the CDC to research firearm safety and gun violence prevention research. Call your member of Congress and tell them to support increased investment in firearm research today.

  1. Fill out the form on this page.
  2. Answer the call that you receive. It will connect you to your U.S. Representative.
  3. Use our sample script to tell them to repeal the Dickey amendment.

Suggested script: I just heard about the recently released GAO report that discusses disproportionate funding for gun violence prevention. I am calling to ask that you co-sponsor Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney’s bill - HR 1832 - to give funding to the CDC to research gun violence prevention.
