Title: Declines in Australian Suicide: A Reanalysis of Mcphedran and Baker

Publication Date: October 2008

What does it say?

After the adoption of stronger national gun laws in Australia in 1996, firearm suicides decreased considerably faster than non-firearm suicides for both males and females.

How can I use it? This study rebuts research by two members of Australia’s pro-gun organization, Women in Shooting and Hunting (WiSH), purporting to show no effect of Australia’s stronger gun laws. The WiSH researchers used an inappropriate statistic to reach their conclusions about changes in firearm suicide from 1997 to 2005.
