Title: Indicators of School Crime and Safety: 2010
Publication Date: November 2010
What does it say?
This report consolidates the most recent information from a wide variety of sources regarding the relationship between violence and schools, including homicides and suicides of school-aged individuals at school as well as away from school. From 2008 to 2009, there were 15 homicides and 7 suicides of youth ages 5-18 at school, and an additional 16 violent school-related deaths of staff and non-students. It is estimated that 2% of youth homicides and 1% of youth suicides occur at school.
As defined by this report, a “school related death” is “a homicide, suicide, or legal intervention (involving a law enforcement officer), in which the fatal injury occurred on the campus of a functional elementary or secondary school in the United States, while the victim was on the from or to regular sessions at school or while the victim was attending or traveling to or from a school sponsored event.”

How can I use it?
Use this edition of the Indicators of School Crime and Safety to understand that violent deaths of American students while involved in school-related activities continue to occur, but account for a very small percent of youth homicides and suicides.
