Title: Saving Lives by Taking Guns Out of Crime: The Drop in Gun-Related Crime Deaths Since Enactment of the Brady Law

Publication Date: March 2000

What does it say?

This research estimates that over 9,000 lives were saved during the first five years of the Brady law because guns were used less often in assaults and robberies. An assault or robbery with another weapon is not nearly as likely to result in death as a gun assault or gun robbery. So, taking guns out of crime saves lives.

How can I use it?

The Brady law requires background checks at licensed gun dealers. Use this report to advocate extending the Brady law to cover all gun sales, including those at gun shows.
