What does it say?
In June 1994, the state of Maryland passed a law banning the sale of assault pistols and high-capacity magazines. This study found that, “…in the first 6 months of 1995, the Baltimore City Police Department recovered 55% fewer assault pistols than would have been expected had there been no ban” (p. 298).
How can I use it?
This report supports other research on assault weapons showing that bans on classes of particularly dangerous weapons like assault weapons may reduce their use in crime. The federal assault weapon ban sunsetted in 2004. Use this research to advocate for its renewal.
