Title: Gun Owners: NRA Gun-Owners and Non-NRA Gun-Owners

Publication Date: December 2009

What does it say?

This national survey of gun owners (401 NRA gun-owners and 431 non-NRA gun owners) was conducted from November 25 to December 2, 2009 on behalf of Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

The survey documents high levels of support by NRA gun-owners for many common sense gun control proposals:

  • 69 percent of NRA gun-owners support requiring all gun sellers at gun shows to conduct criminal background checks of the people buying guns (p. 5);
  • 82 percent of NRA gun-owners support prohibiting people on the terrorist watch list from purchasing guns (p. 5);
  • 78 percent support requiring gun owners to alert police if their guns are lost or stolen (p. 6).

How can I use it?

Use this study to debunk the idea that gun-owning NRA members oppose common sense gun control proposals and to advocate for background checks at gun shows, closing the Terror Gap to stop known or suspected terrorists from purchasing guns, and requiring gun owners to alert police when their guns are lost or stolen
