Title: Suicide Among Male Veterans: A Prospective Population-based Study

Publication Date: July 2007

What does it say?

Male veterans are twice as likely to die of suicide compared with non-veterans in the general population. The risk of death from "natural" causes (diseases) and the risk of death from "external" causes did not differ between the veterans and the non-veterans

How can I use it?

Keeping a gun in the home is associated with a higher risk of suicide.   Health and mental health practitioners caring for veterans should be aware of the link between guns in the home and higher levels of suicide and take steps to protect veterans.
