Univ. Pennsylvania Firearm Research Show Importance of Data Collection
August 22, 2004
—
Seven years ago, the Firearm Injury Center (FICAP) at the University of Pennsylvania set up a program to link data collection from trauma centers in Allentown, PA., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Youngstown, Ohio. Professors Therese S. Richmond and Charles C. Branas have recently published articles that examined the first five years of data. Branas' article, in the March-April issue of Public Health Reports, found that gun homicides in all three communities tended to occur at night, out of the home, and in places where many people were likely to be coming and going.

Philadelphia Officials Call For Stronger Gun Laws
March 15, 2004
—
Philadelphia Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson called for stricter gun laws to prevent gun violence during debate before the City Council. He spoke in favor of a package of bills being considered by the city which would curtail gun trafficking by prohibiting the purchase of more than one handgun per month, require additional reporting on firearms and establish gun-free zones around schools. The city ordinances generally require approval by the state in order to take effect since the gun lobby enacted a state preemption law to block local gun ordinances. Pennsylvania MMM Chapters of
