Scientists at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) have been awarded $1.1 million by the US Department of Justice to continue testing a ?childproof? handgun and expect to deliver the new commercial-ready handgun by January 2006. Since 2000, NJIT has spearheaded efforts to develop a childproof handgun that can automatically recognize one or more pre-programmed authorized users and prevent others from shooting the gun.. Engineers and scientists at the New Jersey Institute of Technology announced that they were "about two years away" from perfecting technology to childproof handguns. The "dynamic grip technology," would electronically store and recognize the grip pattern and pressure of a handgun's owner and prevent the handgun from being fired by anyone else. Taurus International Manufacturing, one of the major gun manufacturers in America, has joined forces with the New Jersey Institute of Technology to develop a "childproof" gun that would only allow only designated users to fire it.
