New York has strong gun laws that help combat the illegal gun market, prevent the sale of guns without background checks and reduce risks to children, according to the Brady Campaign. In the organization’s 2009 state scorecards released for all 50 states, New York earned 50 points out of a total of 100 and has the nation’s sixth strongest gun laws.
“New York is doing a better job than the vast majority of states in adopting laws designed to make it harder for criminals and other dangerous people to access guns,” said Jackie Hilly, Executive Director of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, “but we can and will do more.”
