While Florida allows counties to pass ordinances to require Brady criminal background checks on all gun buyers at gun shows, it still needs to close the gun show loophole at the state level, according to the Brady Campaign. In the organization’s 2009 state scorecards released for all 50 states, Florida earns just 6 points out of a total of 100.
According to government figures, Florida also has the tenth highest percentage of crime guns recovered that were originally purchased within the state. The Brady Campaign relates this “homegrown” gun violence to the weak gun laws in the state and nationally.
