HOT OFF THE PRESS: NEW "THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS” BOOK COMPILES TWEETS FROM HYPOCRITICAL POLITICIANS AFTER MASS SHOOTINGS
WASHINGTON - Thoughts and Prayers: Comforting Tweets From Powerful Hypocrites, the brand new book from the Brady Campaign and Crowdrise, is now flying off virtual shelves. Developed by individuals at creative agency Wieden+Kennedy after the deadly mass shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, the book compiles actual condolence tweets from politicians who have time and again chosen words over actions in the face of gun violence. Hardcopies can be ordered online from Crowdrise for a small donation.
Sarah Silverman provided a tweet of her own as the book's forward and Congressional Gun Violence Prevention Task Force chair Mike Thompson contributed the introduction.
Dan Gross, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, wrote the epilogue for the book. "Every entry in this book represents an opportunity lost. These tweets from some of our most powerful—and hypocritical—politicians do nothing to stop gun violence. Instead of offering solutions, they reflect a complete acceptance of a shameful status quo. And 140-character tweets lamenting tragedies that continue to happened due to their inaction are no longer acceptable.
"Gun violence is a crisis that claims the lives of 90 more Americans every day. The American people deserve more than empty thoughts and prayers from politicians. It's high time we call out these hypocrites for what they really are. We need to send gun lobby lapdogs like Speaker Ryan, Senator Rubio, and Senator Heitkamp an unmistakable message that their thoughts and prayers are meaningless and, actually, offensive to an American public that demands real solutions like expanding Brady background checks to all gun sales. Fortunately some in Congress are about to get that message loud and clear on election day."
People who order online have of the option of sending a book to any member of Congress. The Brady Campaign has already sent copies to Congressman Darrell Issa and Senators Rand Paul, Richard Burr, Roy Blunt, Marco Rubio, and Rob Portman, for some light reading.
