EXPANSION OF BRADY BACKGROUND CHECKS CENTERPIECE OF PRESIDENT’S EXECUTIVE ACTIONS ON GUN VIOLENCE
President’s actions reflect policy recommendations Brady made directly to the White House
WASHINGTON — History will be made in the East Room of the White House tomorrow when President Obama formally announces a series of executive actions to curb gun violence. The most significant of these actions is the clarification of who is “engaged in the business of selling guns” which will result in the expansion of Brady background checks to the thousands of commercial gun sales that happen every day in our nation without them. The announcement comes after the Brady Campaign provided specific policy recommendations to the highest levels of the Administration, including a recent meeting between Brady President Dan Gross and Obama Special Advisor Valerie Jarrett.
“Today, President Obama has taken the bold and meaningful action that Brady and its millions of supporters have been calling for. By making the expansion of Brady Background checks the centerpiece of his executive action, President Obama is not only implementing recommendations we made to the administration, he is taking action that will make us all safer by keeping guns out of the wrong hands,” Gross said. "Brady background checks have blocked more than 2.4 million gun sales to prohibited purchasers, saving countless lives. The problem is every day there are thousands of commercial sales where background checks are not required. Thanks to the President’s historic action today that will no longer be the case.”
Gross added, “Bottom line is If someone is in the business of selling firearms, they should operate under the same rules as any other dealer, which means conducting Brady background checks on purchasers. Brady background checks are the single most important tool we have to keep guns out of the hands of people we all agree shouldn’t have them: felons, domestic abusers, the dangerous mentally ill and terrorists. I look forward to joining the President tomorrow for this historic event.”
