BRADY CAMPAIGN REPORTS 3 MILLION GUN SALES BLOCKED BY BACKGROUND CHECKS ON 23rd ANNIVERSARY OF BRADY BILL SIGNING
Record Black Friday gun sales raise concern over sales done outside background check system
WASHINGTON - Today, on the 23rd anniversary of the Brady bill's signing into law by President Bill Clinton, the Brady Campaign announced that background checks have now blocked more than 3 million gun sales to prohibited purchasers.
The Brady Law requires a Brady background check be conducted for every gun sold at a licensed gun dealer - blocking sales to domestic abusers, felons, and people with dangerous mental illnesses.
The announcement comes just days after Black Friday gun sales hit a record high. The standard metric by which to measure gun sales has been the number of Brady background checks processed by the FBI - which peaked last Friday. But this isn't 1993 anymore, and today nearly 40 percent of all gun sales now happen outside the background check system, through online, gun show, and private sales. What's most concerning is not Friday's record number of background checks run, but the unknown number of guns sold that day without one.
Dan Gross, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, said, "Three million is much more than a statistic - it represents lives saved. It's irrefutable proof that Brady background checks work, that they have made America safer by keeping guns out of the hands of violent criminals, domestic abusers, and dangerously mentally ill people - the people we all agree shouldn't have guns. And it's a reminder, as we look to the new year, of the mandate Congress has to keep Americans safe by expanding these effective, lifesaving background checks. 'America First' means putting the safety of the American people before the demands of any special interest.
"Times have changed, and our nation's gun policies need to catch up. 23 years ago, gun shows weren't big business and the internet wasn't really a thing. Today felons, domestic abusers, and other dangerous people are just a click or quick road-trip away from getting their hands on a gun - with nothing to stop them.
"Even Ronald Reagan agreed Brady background checks were necessary to protect Americans and the Second Amendment, throwing his support behind the Brady Bill. Republican politicians who truly strive to govern in his shadow ought to take a look in the mirror and start acting like the president they claim to emulate."
