BRADY CAMPAIGN RENEWS CALL FOR TRUMP, RNC TO RENOUNCE THOSE WHO THREATEN VIOLENCE ON ELECTION DAY
After sitting Senator suggests violence against Hillary Clinton, the Brady Campaign called on Republicans to denounce violence, disavow Sen. Richard Burr
WASHINGTON - Dan Gross, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, issued a statement after Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) offered a milquetoast apology for lamenting a picture of Hillary Clinton did not have a bullseye over it.
Supporters of the Brady Campaign are once again calling on Donald Trump and the RNC to renounce similar threats of violence and disavow those like Richard Burr who spew such hateful rhetoric.
Brady president Dan Gross said, "Americans are fed up with the vile and dangerous talk of political violence coming from Republicans on the campaign trail. And they're scared of what might happen on election day, even cancelling class at schools with polling places over fear of violence.
"Sen. Burr's weak apology for suggesting supporters put a bullseye on a candidate for president of the United States doesn't go nearly far enough. To say the comment was ‘inappropriate' is the understatement of the century. Trump and the RNC should immediately renounce Burr's violent rhetoric. Instead, Trump will head to North Carolina to campaign with Burr. Certainly no one should be surprised. Trump has said he could shoot someone on 5th Avenue without losing support and has suggested ‘Second Amendment people' should assassinate his opponent. Burr has spent his career shamelessly pandering to the corporate gun lobby, selling out the safety of the American people and protecting the rights of terrorists, domestic abusers, and felons to buy guns. Richard Burr and Donald Trump are two peas in a pod.
"Donald Trump and Sen. Burr should take a lesson from Hillary Clinton and North Carolina Democrats when it comes to forcefully rejecting violent rhetoric, which too often results in actual violence. After the Republican Party headquarters in Hillsborough was firebombed two weeks ago, Clinton immediately denounced the violence as ‘horrific' and ‘unacceptable,' and the local Democratic Party raised more than $13,000 in four hours to help Republicans rebuild.
"In this country, we settle our political differences with ballots, not bullets or bombs. We debate our opponents on the issues; we don't call for their assassination when we're behind in the polls. Every day Trump and the Republican Party fail to renounce hateful and violent rhetoric, they encourage deadly violence.”
