BRADY APPLAUDS CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR AND LEGISLATURE FOR CLOSING TRUMP'S DANGEROUS FUGITIVE LOOPHOLE;
Campaign Urges States To Follow Suit to Protect Brady Background Checks System
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Within his first 100 Days in office, Donald Trump's Administration took several steps to attempt to rollback and undermine the Brady background check system to include his Justice Department allowing people with outstanding arrest warrants to buy guns. California just passed a budget to close that loophole.
Amanda Wilcox, Legislative Chair of the California Brady Campaign said, "When Trump's Justice Department weakened the federal firearm prohibition and put guns back into dangerous hands, California took matters into its own hands. California's law will add a prohibition to outstanding warrants for crimes that carry a firearm prohibition. California is resisting and I urge every state in the U.S. to emulate."
Current state law in California prohibits the possession of firearms by those convicted of a felony or violent misdemeanor and California's new legislation will extend that to those with outstanding warrants for a felony or prohibiting misdemeanors. In other words, if the underlying crime carries a prohibition, then an outstanding arrest warrant for that crime would also carry a prohibition.
