When bad apple gun dealers reform their illegal ways – or are closed down by the ATF – a real difference is made in the community. A pipeline of crime guns is shutoff, making the streets safer. This has been proven in at least two major American cities: New York City and Detroit. In New York, 27 different bad apple gun dealers were taken to court. After they agreed to change their business practices, the odds of a crime gun being recovered in New York from one of these dealers dropped by a massive 84%. Similarly, in Detroit, after a series of undercover stings and lawsuits, trafficked guns sold by in-state retailers dropped by over 36%. These are meaningful results that can be replicated nationwide.
