Democratic Leaders Announce Support of Brady Campaign Legislative Agenda
Sen. Schumer reveals proposal mirroring Brady’s three-point gun violence prevention plan
Washington, D.C., March 1, 2018 - Two weeks after the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL, Sen. Chuck Schumer and Democratic leaders announced that they will support legislation encompassing the previously articulated "Brady Three Point Plan" featuring an assault weapon ban, universal background checks on gun sales, and "extreme risk" laws to remove guns from people in crisis. The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence wholeheartedly endorsed the legislative push, which mirrors the priorities the organization laid out following the school massacre.
Brady co-presidents Kris Brown and Avery Gardiner stated:
"This is the time for bold action on gun violence prevention, and this is what bold action looks like. The overwhelming majority of Americans want gun laws that include universal background checks and a ban on assault weapons, and this 'Brady Plan' proposal does exactly that. We call on every member of Congress to stand up and support these life-saving measures rather than bowing to the NRA's desires to sell more guns. President Trump made clear yesterday his endorsement of exactly this package, and encouraged Congress to bring a comprehensive bill including these provisions for his signature. Now is the time to see if members of Congress equally have the courage to stand up for the American people and not bow to the special interest lobbying of the NRA. We stand ready to support this comprehensive common sense package every step of the way, and thank all the students across this country for raising their voices and bringing us to this point. We have your backs."
