Statement of Sarah Brady, Chair, Handgun Control, Inc. - Response to President Clinton's State of the Union Address

Feb 4, 1997

(Washington, DC) "The President is right: if we want to deal with the issue of juvenile crime, we have to do a better job of keeping guns out of the hands of juveniles. In particular, we must address the problem of guns in the home. Too many children have access to a gun in the home. Too many children are carrying their Dad’s gun to school or on the street. All Americans, especially parents, must work to ensure that children do not have access to handguns, but that responsibility also extends to gun manufactures and gun dealers.

"Gun manufacturers and gun dealers should be required to sell a trigger lock or other device designed to prevent unauthorized use of a firearm with every handgun sold in America. A trigger lock costs just $10.95. That’s a small price to pay for possibly saving the life of a child.

"If the President wants to keep guns out of the hands of our children, he has our full support and the overwhelming support of the American people to push for a life-saving ‘Trigger Lock’ law."
