Brady Campaign Acting President Pleased President Obama Addressing Gun Trafficking In Southern Border States

Jul 12, 2011

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Brady Campaign Acting President Dennis Henigan today issued the following statement in response to President Obama's announcement that the Justice Department would require the reporting of multiple sales of certain semi-automatic rifles to the same purchaser over a five-day period by gun dealers in states near the Mexico border.

“We are pleased that President Obama is moving forward to require reporting of multiple semi-automatic rifle sales in the border states, giving federal law enforcement an important new tool to fight gun trafficking from U.S. dealers into Mexico.  It is now clear that semi-automatic assault rifles, easily available from U.S. dealers, have become the weapon of choice for the Mexican drug cartels.  This new reporting rule will give law enforcement new capacity to interdict these deadly guns before they can be used against Mexican police and citizens.  The Brady Campaign urges President Obama to do all in his power to protect this valuable new initiative from the gun lobby’s inevitable effort to attack it in Congress and the courts.

“Ultimately, though, far more is needed to fight the lethal gun trafficking that is causing unspeakable carnage in Mexico and in the cities of the United States.  In addition to giving law enforcement the power to arrest the traffickers and seize their weapons, we must have stronger laws that prevent the trafficking in the first place.  We need to enact a strong and effective ban on the sale of semi-automatic assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips that are giving drug criminals firepower typically found only on the battlefield.  We need to extend Brady background checks to all gun sales and close the loopholes exploited by the traffickers.  We need to give the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives sufficient legal authority to crack down on corrupt dealers who feed the stream of trafficked guns.

“We are hopeful that the initiative announced today will be but the first step by the Administration to craft and promote a new and far-reaching program to prevent gun trafficking and ensure the safety and security of American and Mexican families alike.”
