The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence strongly supports the ‘Plan to Prevent Future Tragedies’ announced today by Mayors Against Illegal Guns.
“The proposals to strengthen and extend Brady Law background checks proposed by Mayor Bloomberg on behalf of the coalition of more than 500 mayors represent the kind of common sense reforms that are supported by the vast majority of the American people, including the vast majority of gun owners,” said Brady Campaign President Paul Helmke, who also was a three-term mayor of Fort Wayne, Indiana.
“The Brady Campaign worked closely with Rep. Carolyn McCarthy from New York and other Congressional allies to pass the NICS Improvement Amendments Act in 2007, which has resulted in hundreds of thousands of new records of prohibited gun buyers being introduced into the Brady Background Check system. Much more, however, remains to be done to prevent future tragedies like the Tucson shooting and reduce the toll of more than 100,000 Americans shot by guns each year.
“I commend Mayor Bloomberg for endorsing Rep. McCarthy’s new legislation, H.R. 308, banning high-capacity ammunition clips like the one used by the Tucson shooter to kill six innocent people and wound 13 others, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, in an elapsed time of about 16 seconds. And I join Mayor Bloomberg in asking President Obama, in his State of the Union Address, to discuss the need for Congress to enact stronger gun laws making it harder for dangerous individuals to obtain guns and to prevent civilian access to the kind of firepower that should be found only on a military battlefield.“

The Brady Campaign is the nation's largest citizens' lobby to prevent gun violence. We represent the voice of the overwhelming majority of Americans who are tired of living with the constant tragedy of gun violence and are in favor of strong laws and policies that will save lives. We are the light that exposes politicians who are putting the American people at risk, empowering the American people to hold them accountable for decisions and actions that undermine public safety.
We are driven by the focused vision of a nation where all Americans are safe at home, at work, at school, and in our communities.
