Patty Murray's Victory Shows Voters Reject Gun Lobby Extremism

Nov 5, 2010

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Patty Murray, endorsed by the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, defeated three-time statewide candidate, Dino Rossi, who was endorsed by the National Rifle Association. The NRA spent more than $400,000 airing TV ads attacking Senator Murray and sending mail to voters.

“We congratulate Senator Murray on her hard-fought victory,” said Brady Campaign President Paul Helmke.  “Washington voters understand that by keeping Patty Murray in the U.S. Senate, they are keeping a legislator who will stand up to the gun lobby and work to keep all Americans safe from gun violence.”

Murray, who has a long track record of supporting common sense gun laws, defeated Rossi, whose voting record with the gun lobby as a Washington State Senator bought him an A-rating and the endorsement of the NRA. Rossi opposed restrictions on military-style assault weapons, including AK-47s and Uzis and favored weakening ATF’s (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) ability to crack down on corrupt gun dealers. Rossi also supported legislation to allow the carrying of loaded, concealed handguns in Washington State by people legally barred from possessing guns in Washington, as long as they legally were able to carry in another state.

Senator Murray has a strong record voting for Brady Campaign legislative priorities, including a key vote in 1999 to close the “Gun Show Loophole.”  She also supported the Brady Bill in 1993.

“As the nation with the highest rate of gun deaths among high-income countries, America needs elected officials who are willing to stand up for common sense gun laws,” said Helmke. “We are happy that Patty Murray will continue her efforts to reduce gun violence.”

The Brady Campaign is the nation's largest citizens' lobby to prevent gun violence. We represent the voice of the overwhelming majority of Americans who are tired of living with the constant tragedy of gun violence and are in favor of strong laws and policies that will save lives. We are the light that exposes politicians who are putting the American people at risk, empowering the American people to hold them accountable for decisions and actions that undermine public safety.

We are driven by the focused vision of a nation where all Americans are safe at home, at work, at school, and in our communities.
