Senator Boxer, A Fighter for Sensible Gun Laws, Shows Clout of Gun Issue in California

Nov 3, 2010

Washington, DC - The issues of guns - an assault weapons ban and the “terror gap” - helped create a voting gap in California that steered Senator Barbara Boxer to victory last night over her opponent, National Rifle Association-endorsed Carly Fiorina.

“We congratulate Senator Boxer on her strong victory,” said Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, which had endorsed the Senator.  “When Carly Fiorina started talking about allowing terrorists to get guns, her market share fell as dramatically as Hewlett Packard’s did when she was CEO.”

Senator Boxer continuously used the gun issue against Fiorina in stump speeches and in press releases.  “Fiorina’s positions made zero sense in California and put her out of the mainstream with California voters,” Helmke said.  “Candidates who want to win statewide in California should remember this lesson.”

Other California candidates who support sensible gun laws won their races as well. All 26 Brady-endorsed U.S. Representatives easily won their races, while those candidates endorsed by the Brady PAC - California won 25 of 26 State Senate and Assembly races.  Of the 25 endorsements in state races, support from the Brady PAC - California helped elect 2 new State Senators and 8 new Assembly Members.

“We’re thrilled that California will continue to be represented by two U.S. Senators who agree with the vast majority of Californians: that we need to make it harder for dangerous people to get dangerous weapons,” said Dr. Dallas Stout, President of the Brady California Chapters. “We look forward to continuing to work with Senator Boxer, who is a great advocate for gun violence victims.”
