Brady Campaign Endorses Colleen Hanabusa for U.S. House

Oct 29, 2010

Washington, D.C. - The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence today announced its endorsement of Colleen Hanabusa for election to the U.S. House seat from Hawaii's 2nd Congressional District.

As president of the state senate, Colleen Hanabusa stood up to the National Rifle Association time and time again.  She championed efforts to ban the dangerous .50-caliber sniper rifle in the state and fought back an effort to repeal restrictions on large capacity ammunition magazines that give criminals extraordinary firepower.

"Colleen Hanabusa has shown that she has the political courage to stand up to the gun pushers - something that is sorely needed in Washington, DC," said Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign.  "Her leadership has served Hawaiians well and I am confident she will work to help make us safer at home, at work, and in our communities. I am proud to endorse her on behalf of the Brady Campaign."

The Brady Campaign is urging candidates for public office to support specific steps to help make American communities safer, such as:

· Requiring Brady criminal background checks on all gun sales, including at gun shows

· Strengthening law enforcement's efforts to disrupt the illegal gun market, by providing tools to crack down on corrupt gun dealers and stop the large-volume gun sales that supply gun traffickers; and,

· Restricting civilian access to military-style assault weapons.

###

The Brady Campaign is the nation's largest citizens' lobby to prevent gun violence. We represent the voice of the overwhelming majority of Americans who are tired of living with the constant tragedy of gun violence and are in favor of strong laws and policies that will save lives. We are the light that exposes politicians who are putting the American people at risk, empowering the American people to hold them accountable for decisions and actions that undermine public safety.

We are driven by the focused vision of a nation where all Americans are safe at home, at work, at school, and in our communities.
