Brady Campaign Endorses Cedric Richmond For U.S. House

Oct 15, 2010

Washington, D.C. - Leaders of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence today announced the organization’s endorsement of Cedric Richmond for the U.S. House seat from Louisiana’s 2nd Congressional District.

“Cedric Richmond grew up in New Orleans and faced great adversity from early on, but he cast aside all the roadblocks in his life and has dedicated himself to public service,” said Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign.  “I am very impressed with his understanding of the terrible human cost of gun violence in our cities, and the need to combat that gun violence.  He’d make a great member of Congress.

Richmond, the Democratic nominee for the seat, supports common-sense limitations on civilian access to military-style semiautomatic assault weapons and closing the gun show loophole that allows dangerous people to buy guns without having to pass a Brady criminal background check.  “Cedric Richmond has the courage to do the right thing, and he has proven it by standing up to the gun lobby to keep his constituents safe,” Helmke said.

As a leader in the Louisiana State House, Richmond fought hard for legislation to prohibit the sale of AK-47s, which have shown up in criminal hands in New Orleans frequently since the expiration of the federal ban on assault weapons in 2004, putting citizens and police at risk.
