Washington, D.C. - Van Tran, the Republican candidate for California’s 47th Congressional District has voted against critical public safety legislation in the California Assembly to protect law enforcement officers and to help police solve gun crimes.
Earlier this year, Tran voted against AB 1934, a bill that called for an end to the carrying of openly displayed handguns in public. The bill was a top legislative priority of the California Police Chiefs Association, and the California Brady Campaign Chapters and it was opposed by the National Rifle Association. “Tran’s opposition was a clear signal that he cares more about pleasing the NRA lobbyists than he does about the needs of law enforcement officials and gun violence victims,” said Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.
Unfortunately, Tran’s practice of voting against common-sense gun laws is not without precedent. In 2007, Tran also voted against AB 1471, a bill to require that new semi-automatic handguns be equipped with technology that allows police to match shell casings found at a crime scene to the handgun that fired them. The bill, signed into law by Governor Schwarzenegger in 2007, was supported by more than 60 California police chiefs, sheriffs and police organizations, including the California Police Chiefs Association, the Orange County Chiefs and Sheriffs Association, and Anaheim Police Chief John Welter. Nevertheless, Tran decided once again to oppose law enforcement and cater to the NRA.
“Van Tran’s voting record on guns is way out of step with the people of California,” said Dr. Dallas Stout, President of the California Brady Campaign Chapters. “His willingness to ignore the needs of law enforcement officers indicates that he has no interest in addressing our nation’s crisis of gun violence.”
“Police chiefs and the vast majority of Californians want sensible gun laws and oppose the proliferation of guns in public places,” added Helmke. “Van Tran’s election to the U.S. House would be a major step backwards for law enforcement and public safety.”
