Statement of Paul Helmke on PA Court Ruling Against NRA Lawsuit

Jun 25, 2010

Pittsburgh, PA - Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, commented on the Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court ruling today affirming the dismissal of the National Rifle Association’s lawsuit challenging Pittsburgh’s ordinance requiring that gun owners tell police if they discover their firearms have been lost or stolen:

“This is the fifth time Pennsylvania courts have rejected the NRA’s challenges to lost and stolen gun reporting requirements.  It is common sense that gun owners should tell police when guns have been stolen and may be used in a crime.

“This is a loss for the NRA and gun traffickers, and a victory for Pennsylvania cities working to protect families from gun violence.”

The Brady Campaign is the nation's largest citizens' lobby to prevent gun violence. We represent the voice of the overwhelming majority of Americans who are tired of living with the constant tragedy of gun violence and are in favor of strong laws and policies that will save lives. We are the light that exposes politicians who are putting the American people at risk, empowering the American people to hold them accountable for decisions and actions that undermine public safety.

We are driven by the focused vision of a nation where all Americans are safe at home, at work, at school, and in our communities.
