Washington, D.C. - Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, issued this statement today on the 29th anniversary of the shootings of President Reagan and White House Press Secretary James Brady:
“On this day 29 years ago, a robust, warm, funny, clever man in the prime of his life, at the pinnacle of his profession, took a bullet intended for the President of the United States. A man who charmed everyone, who served his country with great honor, saw his career destroyed and now lives in a wheelchair, battling severe pain.
“Back then, this happened because we made it too easy in America for dangerous people to get dangerous guns. And we still do. We need to extend Brady background checks to all gun sales, including sales at gun shows. We owe that to Jim Brady for his personal sacrifice.”

The Brady Campaign is the nation's largest citizens' lobby to prevent gun violence. We represent the voice of the overwhelming majority of Americans who are tired of living with the constant tragedy of gun violence and are in favor of strong laws and policies that will save lives. We are the light that exposes politicians who are putting the American people at risk, empowering the American people to hold them accountable for decisions and actions that undermine public safety.
We are driven by the focused vision of a nation where all Americans are safe at home, at work, at school, and in our communities.
