Washington, DC – Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, issued the following statement about yesterday's 86-18 vote defeating HB 27 in the Louisiana State Legislature to force loaded, concealed handguns on the state's college campuses:
"I applaud the Louisiana House of Representatives for rejecting the gun lobby's attempts to force loaded, concealed handguns onto their college and university campuses. They have joined nine other states so far this year that have reached the same conclusion, including Alabama, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Virginia. The Louisiana House couldn't have offered a more stern rebuke of this dangerous policy than defeating it by a vote of 86-18.
"Law enforcement, students, faculty, staff, and even the LSU football coach were against this bill. A survivor of the Virginia Tech massacre now working with the Brady Campaign, Colin Goddard, also submitted his testimony to the House in opposition to the bill.
"Yet the gun lobby actively pushed state legislators in Baton Rouge to get this dangerous legislation passed. Even Governor Bobby Jindal said he would sign it. Nevertheless, over a dozen NRA A-rated members voted against this bill. Clearly, when it comes to pushing loaded, concealed weapons into the classroom, the gun lobby failed completely."

The Brady Campaign is the nation's largest citizens' lobby to prevent gun violence. We represent the voice of the overwhelming majority of Americans who are tired of living with the constant tragedy of gun violence and are in favor of strong laws and policies that will save lives. We are the light that exposes politicians who are putting the American people at risk, empowering the American people to hold them accountable for decisions and actions that undermine public safety.
We are driven by the focused vision of a nation where all Americans are safe at home, at work, at school, and in our communities.
