To Help Keep Dangerous Guns Away From Dangerous People, Brady Campaign Endorses Bob Roggio For Congress

Sep 23, 2008

Washington, D.C. - The Brady Campaign top Prevent Gun Violence, along with its Pennsylvania Million Mom March Chapters, today endorsed Bob Roggio for election to Congress from Pennsylvania’s Sixth Congressional District. He is running against incumbent Congressman Jim Gerlach.

Bob Roggio is a strong advocate for his community as a business leader, former army reservist, former Southeast Pennsylvania Field Representative for Senator Bob Casey, as well as Little League coach and former League President in Berwyn-Paoli.

“Bob Roggio will fight for common sense gun laws to reduce the tragic toll of gun violence in America,” said Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign.  “His opponent, Jim Gerlach voted against restrictions on .50-caliber sniper rifles and other legislation that will make our families and neighborhoods less safe.”

The Brady Campaign is urging candidates for public office to support specific steps to help make American communities safer, such as:

  • Requiring Brady criminal background checks on all gun sales, including at gun shows;
  • Strengthening law enforcement’s efforts to disrupt the illegal gun market, by providing tools to crack down on corrupt gun dealers and stop the large-volume gun sales that supply gun traffickers; and,
  • Restricting civilian access to military-style assault weapons.

“We make it too easy for dangerous people to get dangerous weapons,” Helmke said.  “There are only a few national gun control laws on the books, and even those have loopholes.  This leads to senseless gun violence devastating the lives of tens of thousands.  We know we will have a partner in Bob Roggio in fighting for sensible gun laws to protect you, your family and your community.”
