Jim and Sarah Brady, Members of Congress, Big City Mayors and a Mother who Lost Her Son To Gunfire Call For Child Safety Locks to be Sold with Every Handgun
(Washington, DC) Nearly 1.2 million latchkey children have access to loaded and unlocked firearms. It should not be surprising, therefore, that children unintentionally fire guns 10,000 times every year, resulting in at least 800 deaths. Additionally, approximately 1,900 children and teenagers attempt suicide with a firearm every year. More than three-fourths of them are fatal. These deaths are preventable!Today, Handgun Control, Inc. Chair Sarah Brady and her husband, former White House Press Secretary James Brady, joined with Senators Herb Kohl (D-WI), Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Dick Durbin (D-IL); Congressmen Charles Schumer (D-NY-9) and Earl Blumenauer (D-OR-3); Chicago Mayor and President of the ...read the full release

Sarah and Jim Brady Join Law Enforcement to Commemorate Third Anniversary of Brady Law
(Washington, DC) "Today is a very special day for Jim and me as we commemorate the third anniversary of when the Brady Law went into effect," said Sarah Brady, Chair of Handgun Control, Inc. Statement of Bob Walker, Presidnet, Handgun Control, Inc. Re: Shooting at Empire State Building
(Washington, DC) This is not the first time, nor the last, that a killer took advantage of weak gun laws in one state, in this instance Florida, to commit a crime in a state with much tougher gun control laws -- New York. A few years ago, as in the case of the Long Island Railroad shooting, the killer -- Colin Ferguson -- flew to California and established residency in order to purchase a gun and avoid New York’s licensing requirements.Yesterday’s shooting, like earlier ones, dramatizes the need for tougher federal legislation. We must find a way of stopping the ...read the full release

Statement of Sarah Brady, Chair, Handgun Control, Inc. Response To Passage of Chicago's Child Safety Lock Ordinance
(Washington, DC) "The City of Chicago has done the right thing. Today the City Council passed one of the most significant pieces of life-saving legislation in the nation. By requiring all handguns to have a child safety device, the City of Chicago is showing its commitment to keeping its children safe from firearm injury and death."President Clinton on Tuesday called for this type of legislation on a national level during his State of the Union address. Chicago has taken the lead this week, and we hope other cities, state legislatures, and Congress will follow. "I congratulate Mayor Richard M. Daley, ...read the full release

Statement of Sarah Brady, Chair, Handgun Control, Inc. - Response to President Clinton's State of the Union Address
(Washington, DC) "The President is right: if we want to deal with the issue of juvenile crime, we have to do a better job of keeping guns out of the hands of juveniles. In particular, we must address the problem of guns in the home. Too many children have access to a gun in the home. Too many children are carrying their Dad’s gun to school or on the street. All Americans, especially parents, must work to ensure that children do not have access to handguns, but that responsibility also extends to gun manufactures and gun dealers. "Gun manufacturers and ...read the full release
