Target shooting blamed for wildfires in parched West, but gun rights prevail over restrictions
Campfires, fireworks and even lit cigarettes can spark wildfires. In the tinder-dry West, there is growing concern about the threat from guns. This year, officials believe target shooting or other firearms use sparked at least 21 wildfires in Utah and nearly a dozen in Idaho. Independence Day undoubtedly stirs sadness in many folks, including loved ones of former Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair and former Northwestern University men's basketball coach Ricky Byrdsong. McNair, who led the Titans to within one yard of potentially tying or winning Super Bowl XXXIV, was shot and killed by his girlfriend July 4, 2009. Miami federal judge sides with 'Docs' over 'Glocks' in Fla. gun rights case
A federal judge has blocked the state of Florida from enforcing a new law pushed by firearm advocates that banned thousands of doctors from discussing gun ownership with their patients. U.S. District Judge Marcia Cooke, who had already issued a preliminary injunction last September, made her decision permanent late Friday when she ruled in favor of groups of physicians who asserted the state violated their free speech rights. She said the law was so "vague" that it violated the First Amendment rights of doctors, noting the legislation's privacy provisions "fail to provide any standards for practitioners to follow." ...read the full article

Emanuel reloads city's gun law
Mayor Rahm Emanuel wants to rewrite Chicago's firearm ordinance in response to a ruling by a federal judge who struck down a section of the city's law he called vague and unconstitutional. Emanuel said Monday he wants individuals with a violent misdemeanor conviction to be banned from getting a gun permit for five years.
