Why Obama Would Be Foolish Not to Pursue Gun Control
Why Obama Would Be Foolish Not to Pursue Gun Control JUL 27 2012, 2:03 PM ET 39 Voters who oppose firearm restrictions have so many other reasons to oppose Obama that they are unlikely to switch if he holsters this issue. On gun control, Democrats remain paralyzed by the fear of losing voters whom they have already lost. After the Aurora, Colo., massacre last week, President Obama waited until this Wednesday to raise the issue at all -- and even then stopped short of reaffirming his previous support for restoring the assault-weapons ban passed under Bill Clinton. And this week, when several Democratic legislators ...read the full article

Gun Control Group Brady Campaign Calls On Obama, Romney To Lead On Policy Solutions
WASHINGTON -- A prominent gun control group on Thursday called on President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney to lead a search for solutions to gun violence, upping the political pressure on the White House hopefuls to take a decisive stance after the mass shootings in Colorado. The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence said both candidates owe voters concrete plans, and that tens of thousands of people had already signed a petition urging them to speak up. The group's president, Dan Gross, said it was shameful for political leaders to play politics when lives could be saved. "We truly believe, ...read the full article

Gun Control Group Calls On Presidential Candidates to Outline Plans
Gun Control Group Calls On Presidential Candidates to Outline Plans By EMMARIE HUETTEMAN The president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence challenged President Obama and Mitt Romney on Thursday to offer solutions in the wake of last week's deadly shooting in Aurora, Colo. Speaking after Mr. Obama called for "common sense" gun control measures at the National Urban League's conference on Wednesday, Dan Gross, the group's president, said that while the group appreciated the president's words, they were not enough. "The president said very similar things in his last campaign," Mr. Gross said. "A speech is not a plan." Pointing out that the ...read the full article

Perlmutter: Gun control a 'congressional issue'
Rep. Ed Perlmutter (D-Colo.) said on Sunday the issue of gun control is a "congressional issue" and that Congress must act to reinstate the assault weapons ban. Speaking from Aurora, Colo., on CBS's "Face the Nation," Perlmutter also addressed the earlier interview with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who said the issue of gun control falls squarely on the presidential candidates. But it is Congress that really needs to take action, Perlmutter said, and Bloomberg is "putting his finger on the wrong spot." "Mayor [Michael Bloomberg] saying this is all on the president's back or the presidential candidates' back, Romney and President ...read the full article

Gun-control advocates: Americans must voice outrage at massacre
Colorado has some of the weakest gun-control laws in the nation, according to gun control advocates who say Friday's massacre at an Aurora, Colo., movie theater should be a clarion call for Americans to demand tougher gun control laws. The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, one of the nation's most vocal proponents of tougher gun control, ranked Colorado as one of the most lenient states in the nation in terms of gun control. The organization's report card gave Colorado a failing grade of 15 out of a possible score of 100. The score is especially troubling considering that Colorado residents voted ...read the full article

NRA, gun industry once again mine profit from paranoia

In the health-care debate, we've all watched as the proudest single accomplishment of a self-described "severely conservative" Republican governor has somehow been transformed into proof of Marxist intent once that same plan was adopted by a Democratic president. It's political alchemy at its best. In fact, as testimony to the power of propaganda, that one's hard to beat. It reminds us that if people really want to believe something -- even something manifestly ridiculous, illogical and countermanded by facts -- they will still find a way to do so. But this example of that same phenomenon comes in a close second: "Gun ...read the full article
