Group, State Rep Decry ‘Gun Show Loophole’
TROTWOOD -- A local state legislator and a liberal advocacy group called for better enforcement of existing gun laws and closure of a "gun show loophole" that they say allows gun sales without background checks at shows like the one held at Hara Arena.
"We're just asking that promoters of these shows do something to proactively require" background checks, said Brian Rothenberg, executive director of ProgressOhio.
He spoke at a news conference held outside the Bill Goodman Gun and Knife Show, which was held Saturday at Hara Arena. The event continues today.

Gun Involved in 'Road Rage Duel' Legally Owned
DALE CITY, Va. - The gun that police say was used to fire 13 shots during a road rage duel on Interstate 95 was legally owned, WTOP has learned.
Gabriel Poventud, 25, and James Bringham, 44, have been charged with attempted murder in the altercation that began at the height of Tuesday's afternoon rush hour. Police say Bringham, the driver of a 2007 Ford F550 dump truck, tried to merge into the southbound lanes of I-95 near Route 123, shortly after 4 p.m.
Police say the drivers then "began engaging with one another in an aggressive manner."

Jail or No Jail? Fateful Day Arrives for Arenas
WASHINGTON -- When Gilbert Arenas appeared at a charity event a few weeks ago, no amount of smiles and hugs could hide the underlying tension surrounding the next big date on his calendar.
"So that's what everybody's waiting for," Arenas said. "March 26, huh?"
The fateful date has arrived.
The Washington Wizards three-time All-Star point guard will be sentenced Friday in D.C. Superior Court on one felony count of violating the District of Columbia's strict gun laws. Judge Robert E. Morin will decide whether Arenas does jail time or gets probation.

District's Post-Heller Firearm Restrictions Are Upheld
Judge Ricardo Urbina of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia has just ruled that the D.C. firearm ordinances enacted after the Supreme Court's D.C. v. Heller decision in 2008 "permissibly regulate the exercise of the core Second Amendment right to use firearms for the purpose of self-defense in the home." Urbina ruled in a case brought by Dick Heller, the same plaintiff who challenged the previous D.C. ordinance at the Supreme Court.
Heller challenged the District's firearms registration process, its ban on assault weapons and its prohibition of "large capacity ammunition feeding devices," claiming

Arenas Gets Probation in Felony Gun Case
WASHINGTON - Washington Wizards star Gilbert Arenas has been sentenced to two years of probation for bringing four handguns into the Wizard's locker room last December.
D.C. Superior Court Judge Robert E. Morin also ordered Arenas to spend 30 days in a halfway house, perform 400 hours of community service and donate $5,000 to a victims of violent crime charity.
"You have demonstrated genuine remorse and you're basically a good person," Morin told Arenas.
Before his sentencing, Arenas cried to the judge and apologized for the incident.

After a Supreme Court Loss, Washington’s Gun Laws Pass Muster
Washington can restrict the right of its residents to own guns -- again -- a federal judge ruled Friday.
In his opinion, Judge Ricardo M. Urbina of Federal District Court for the District of Columbia found that new gun laws, which were passed after the United States Supreme Court struck down a previous firearms ban, are constitutionally sound.
The 2008 Supreme Court case, District of Columbia v. Heller, recognized an individual right to keep and bear arms in the Second Amendment to the Constitution. That decision, however, left open the possibility of measured firearms regulation.

Concealed-Weapons Bills Up for Vote
Proposed legislation that would make Arizona the third state in the nation to allow adults to carry concealed guns without permits may be the first of the dozen or so weapons-related bills proposed this session to hit the governor's desk.
Lawmakers have amended Senate Bill 1108 and House Bill 2347 so they consist of identical language that would, among other things, eliminate the requirement for concealed-carry weapon permits for U.S. citizens 21 and older.
The Senate bill, crafted by Sen. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa, was approved Tuesday by the Senate Committee of the Whole and now awaits a

Starbucks Shareholders Reject Recycling Initiative; Company Declares First Dividend
In the world of coffee, a shot in the dark is a shot of espresso in brewed coffee. It gets your attention.
A Starbucks shareholder took another kind of shot in the dark recently, proposing the company recycle more.
The measure lost, as expected, but about 11 percent of Starbucks shareholders voted in favor, which activists hope will get the company's attention.
"I don't understand why they wouldn't make every effort to recycle. Why not?" investor Gail Trezise, of Seattle, said after Starbucks' annual shareholders meeting at McCaw Hall.

Rep. Tim Briggs Applauds Firearm Reporting Resolution
BRIDGEPORT -- As previously reported in The Times Herald, Bridgeport Borough Council recently approved (9-0) a resolution that would require gun owners to report stolen firearms missing within two days of becoming aware of the theft.
With West Conshohocken also joining the 30-plus municipalities across Pennsylvania that have shown similar support for the reform, state Rep. Tim Briggs, D-149th Dist., praised the boroughs for taking action.

Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz Misses Target in Gun Debate
Starbucks has recently become an unwilling Ground Zero in the never-ending debate between those who love guns, and those who wish to make them scarce. And yesterday, CEO Howard Schultz fired a blank in his attempt to ease shareholder concerns that this duel might distract from the business of making money.
Fact is, it's perfectly legal to carry a weapon, even a loaded one, into any Starbucks in a state with open carry laws like Washington's. But that's not how Schultz sees it.
"I do want to clarify something you said that is not right," he said during
Wednesday's
Q&A.
