POSITION: The Brady Campaign supports strong gun laws that will help law enforcement combat the firearms trafficking that supplies guns to criminals like the bills recently announced by U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) (S. 2878) and Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) (H.R. 4298). We need to keep dangerous guns out of the hands of criminals.

PROBLEM: Illegal guns don’t just fall from the sky into the hands of criminals. Almost 60% of the nation’s crime guns come from only 1% of gun dealers. Our weak gun laws make it too easy for corrupt gun dealers to supply gun traffickers with an unlimited numbers of handguns and military-style assault weapons for the criminal market.

THREAT: Criminals with illegal guns are victimizing our communities across America, causing death and injuries.

URGENCY: Every day, people are killed by criminals who use illegal guns. We make it too easy for dangerous people to obtain dangerous weapons. This leads to senseless gun violence affecting tens of thousands.

SOLUTION: We need to implement a common sense comprehensive policy to help law enforcement prevent gun trafficking. We can pass effective laws that make sense: requiring Brady criminal background checks on all gun sales, not just those of licensed dealers; banning military-style assault weapons with high capacity magazines; limiting the number of handguns that can be bought at one time; and, giving law enforcement new legal authority to crack down on corrupt gun dealers.

GET ACTIVE: Contact your Representative and Senators to urge them to pass S. 2878 and H.R. 4298
