The Gun Lobby Has Weakened Our Gun Laws and Endangered Our Families

The National Rifle Association (NRA) and its gun industry allies have worked tirelessly to repeal and undermine our gun laws and create numerous loopholes in these laws. Since 2000, the gun lobby has chipped away at our sensible guns laws, achieving the destruction of crucial Brady background check records, allowing the Federal Assault Weapons Ban to expire, and spreading the carrying of loaded, hidden handguns.

These dangerous actions have reversed the trend of declining gun crime in the 1990’s. Gun crime soared a shocking 49% from 2004 to 2005 and has continued to climb since then. Thanks to the NRA, for example, it is legal under Federal law for a teenager to purchase an AK-47 semi-automatic assault rifle at a gun show without having to show ID and without a background check. These lethal loopholes in our laws must be closed.
