Statement from Dr. Dallas M. Stout, President, California Brady Campaign Chapters

“Over the past twenty years, California has been leading the way in enacting sensible gun laws to prevent gun violence.  In that time, California has reduced its firearm mortality rate by 52%.  Yet our work is not done, as 6,000 Californians are shot every year.  Keeping guns out of the hands of dangerous people remains a top-priority in California, including closing loopholes in the current law that allow criminals to buy ammunition without a background check.”

“We urge our legislature and Governor Brown to continue leading the nation to keep Californians safe by supporting the package of gun reform bills in the LIFE (Lifesaving Intelligent Firearms Enforcement) Act.  Thirty-two Americans are killed by guns every day - eight of them are children.  Doing nothing is not an option.”

The LIFE Act package includes:

SB 374 (Steinberg) - Simplifies California’s assault weapons law by prohibiting future sale of semi-automatic centerfire rifles with exchangeable ammunition magazines that enable rapid reload.

SB 396 (Hancock) - Limits possession of large capacity (greater than 10 rounds) ammunition magazines.

SB 53 (de León) - Would prevent convicted criminals from being able to purchase ammunition by requiring ammunition buyers to become authorized to purchase ammunition by passing a complete background check.

SB 567 (Jackson) - Limits rifled bore shotguns with high capacity revolving ammunition cylinders.

SB 683 (Block) - Expands the Handgun Safety Certificate program to include all firearms.

SB 755 (Wolk) - Expands the list of misdemeanor categories that carry a ten-year prohibition from firearms purchase or possession, including two DUI offenses within a three-year period.

The mission of the Brady organization is to create a safer America for all of us that will lead to the dramatic reduction in gun deaths and injuries that we all seek.
