Counting people shot in a year and each day

The graphic above shows the composite estimated average number of people shot or killed in the United States in one year and every day.

The "live" counter on the top right corner of our home page is based on these numbers.  You will notice that the live counter will go up as you browse or come back the site.

At midnight in Washington DC, the number will reach its highest value and then reset for the next day.

This fact sheet provides an average annual estimated composite picture of gun violence based on death certificate data and estimates from emergency room admissions.  Years for deaths and for injuries are not the same because of reporting lags.  Data: CDC National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, Web-based Injury Statistics Query and Reporting System (2006 (deaths) and 2008 (injuries)), www.cdc.gov/ncipc/wisqars/.
