Each day in America, an average of 276 people are killed with a gun or treated for a gun injury in the emergency room.  The overview below provides the latest statistics on gun deaths and injuries in the United States, broken down by age and type of gun injury.

The counter at the top right is based on the the annual number of people shot.  Click on the "Overview" (below) to see the detailed statistics and sources for our — tragically high — annual number.

The first number estimates those who have been  shot since the beginning of the calendar year.

You will notice that the people "shot so far today"  number will go up as you browse or come back the site.  At midnight in Washington DC, the number will reach it's highest value and then it resets for the next day.

PROBLEM: There are too many victims of gun violence because we make it too easy for dangerous people to get dangerous weapons in America.

DID YOU KNOW? In one year, more than 100,000 people in America were shot in murders, assaults, suicides, accidents, or by police intervention.

  • 30,896 people died from gun violence
    • 12,791 people murdered.
    • 16,883 people killed themselves.
    • 642 people killed accidentally.
    • 360 killed by police intervention.
    • 220 died but intent was not known
  • 69,863 people survived gun injuries
    • 48,676 people injured in an attack.
    • 4,291 people injured in a suicide attempt.
    • 15,698 people shot accidentally.
    • 1,198 people shot in a police intervention.

DID YOU KNOW? In one year, more than 20,784 American children and teens, ages 0-19,
were shot in murders, assaults, suicides, accidents, or by police intervention.

  • 3,218 kids died from gun violence
    • 2,225 children and teens murdered.
    • 763 children and teens killed themselves.
    • 154 children and teens killed accidentally.
    • 34 killed by police intervention.
    • 42 died but intent was not known
  • 17,566 kids survived gun injuries
    • 12,864 injured in an attack.
    • 494 injured in a suicide attempt.
    • 4,165 people shot accidentally.
    • 43 shot in a police intervention.

  • 276 people in America, 57 of them children and teens were shot in murders, assaults, suicides, accidents, and police intervention.
  • 85 people die from gun violence, 35 of them murdered. 
  • 9 children and teens die from gun violence.
  • 191 people are shot, but survive their gun injuries.
  • 48 children and teens are shot, but survive their gun injuries.
