California Brady Campaign Chapters SUPPORT the following priority bills:

AB 1810 (Feuer): Long Gun Record Retention

This bill, AB 1810, would require the retention of sale and transfer records for longs guns by the Department of Justice (DOJ), so that handguns and long guns are treated in the same manner.

Currently, law enforcement uses handgun records to conduct crime gun traces and solve handgun crime, disarm felons and other prohibited persons, and return stolen handguns to their rightful owner.  AB 1810 would enable law enforcement to use long gun records for the same purposes.

California Brady Campaign Chapters are co-sponsors of this important bill.

AB 1934 (Saldana): Ban Open Carry

AB 1934 would ban the carrying of unloaded, exposed handguns in any public place or street in an incorporated and unincorporated city or county in California.  Appropriate exceptions are in the bill.

CA Bill Would Help Law Enforcement Track Down Armed Criminals

The California Assembly Public Safety Committee is considering important legislation, AB 1810, to help law enforcement track down armed criminals and solve gun crimes.

AB 1810 would require the retention of purchase and transfer records of all firearms in California.

Currently, only handgun purchase and transfer records are retained by the Department of Justice (DOJ). The mandatory destruction of long gun records hampers law enforcement efforts to disarm felons, issue domestic violence warrants, and resolve gun crimes.

Data from the California Department of Justice shows that over half the guns recovered from armed and prohibited persons are long guns.

AB 1810 would require the preservation of records for long guns sold or transferred after July 1, 2012. Help us close this dangerous loophole now!

Victory! Governor Schwarzenegger Signs Ammunition Bill

The California Chapters celebrated a significant victory recently when one of our top priority bills for 2009 was signed into law!

On October 11, Governor Schwarzenegger signed AB 962, which will require dealers to keep ammunition purchase records in order to help law enforcement officials determine when dangerous people are in possession of illegal handgun ammunition and illegal guns.

"Assembly Bill 962 reasonably regulates access to ammunition and improves public safety without placing undue burdens on consumers," said Gov. Schwarzenegger at the signing ceremony. "For these reasons, I am pleased to sign this bill."

California Brady Campaign Chapter Leaders and members attended the ceremonial signing at the Los Angeles Police Department on October 15th. The Governor joined them in ringing the Brady Campaign Bell, which is rung in memory of loved ones who were victims of gun violence, as well as in times of victory when laws are passed that will save lives.

The California Brady Campaign Chapters were instrumental in getting the local government ordinances passed in Sacramento County, Los Angeles County, Oakland, Tiburon and Contra Costa County -- where ammunition regulation was demonstrated to work by helping law enforcement apprehend felons and gang members. The California Brady Chapters worked closely with law enforcement and a coalition of gun violence prevention organizations to get this important legislation passed at the state level.
