Three Cheers for Common Sense! Recent Legislative Victories

Victory!

The 2009 Texas legislative session has ended, and for those who support sensible guns laws, it was a very good session.

We had the following victories:

Extending Brady Background Checks
Our calls and emails paid off recently when Governor Perry signed the NICS Improvement Bill (HB 3352) into law!

This law will require that the names of those individuals whom a court has determined to be a danger to themselves or others be submitted to the Brady Background Check system, so that these individuals will be prohibited from purchasing a firearm from a licensed dealer.

The author of the bill, Texas Senator Rodney Ellis, had this to say: “After three legislative sessions, we have finally closed a dangerous firearm loophole that has been left open in Texas for way too long. With the passage of HB 3352, Texans can now feel safe knowing that persons committed to state hospitals and those found not guilty by reason of insanity can no longer purchase a firearm in the state.”

Also thanks to our work this legislative session, the gun lobby's top two priorities failed:

Guns on Campus
While legislation to allow
guns on campus passed the State Senate, it never made it to the floor of the House.

Texas's Universities and Colleges, administrators, campus law enforcement, students, and parents came out in strong opposition to this reckless bill. University of Texas students in particular worked tirelessly, walking the halls of the Capitol to talk to lawmakers, and testifying at committee hearings.

YOU helped defeat this legislation by making calls and sending emails and it worked, our lawmakers were made to understand that this time Texas had to say no to the gun lobby!

Guns in the Workplace
In addition to guns on campus, the gun lobby had again pushed legislation that would force employers to accept guns in the workplace by allowing employees to store guns in their cars parked in employer-owned parking lots.

Small businesses and corporations worked together to stop this dangerous bill. Common sense prevailed and the gun lobby was defeated again!
