Accounting Manager / Controller

Position: Accounting Manager / Controller
Department: Finance
Reports to: Director of Finance
Location: Washington, DC


Oversee all accounting and reporting activities in accordance with GAAP. Advise on financial and management policies. Manage the work of independent consultants, including auditors. Responsible for accounting operations, to include the timely and accurate production of financial reports, account reconciliations, fixed asset management, maintenance of the reporting system, implementing and monitoring controls to mitigate risk, and preparing or reviewing required Federal and State filings and managing cash receipts and accounts payable functions.



  • Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures
  • Manage outsourced functions
  • Oversee the accounting operations, including on-going maintenance of chart of accounts and financial systems
  • Manage relationships with internal groups and flow of accounting information
  • Oversee donor database and general ledger reconciliation process
  • Manage intercompany transactions and compliance with C3 and C4 financial requirements
  • Coordinate information to external auditors
  • Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings


  • Issue timely and complete financial statements
  • Assist with the preparation of annual report
  • Assist with annual budgeting and forecasting
  • Calculate variances from budget and report significant issues to management
  • Provide adhoc financial analysis as needed


  • Ensure that accounts payable are paid in a timely manner
  • Ensure all revenue and accounts receivable are accurately captured
  • Identify and prepare monthly and annual adjusting entries
  • Assist with payroll
  • Ensure 501c3 and 501c4 transactions are accurately captured in the general ledger
  • Ensure that monthly bank reconciliations are completed
  • Maintain the chart of accounts
  • Maintain an orderly accounting filing system
  • Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions


  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, business administration or equivalent. CPA preferred
  • At least 5 years of experience in an equivalent position including supervisory management and personnel skills
  • Must be proficient in computerized accounting systems, preferably MAS90. Must be proficient in use of computers to aid the accounting function
  • Familiarity with non-profit organizations preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate relationships and work successfully with other organizational units to achieve common objectives
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
