Meet a Sensible Gun Law Activist: Lewis Black

This issue's sensible gun law activist: Lewis Black, actor and comedian.

Lewis Black is the most indignant, exasperated man in America. No matter the stupidity, the illogic, or the injustice, Black will find it and tell us about it. It is this steadfast determination to debunk the illogical that makes him a natural advocate for gun violence prevention, where we deal with the injustice of the gun issue as well as the stupidity of the gun lobby and their political allies all the time!

With the mouth of a shock-jock and the heart of a liberal, it is in Black's tremendous storytelling (as evidenced in his weekly "Back in Black" spotlight on "The Daily Show"), that we find humor in the ludicrous: we laugh until our organs ache and suddenly, it - the stupid, the illogical, or the unjust - loses a little power.

Lewis Black, self-declared "America's foremost commentator on everything," has been speaking out about the gun issue for many years. As an honoree and entertainer at our Brady Center events, Black has used his sarcasm and wit to expose the extremism of the gun industry and the insanity of the gun lobby. Lewis Black is truly a friend to our cause.

After being an honored guest at a recent Brady Center fundraiser in Washington, DC, Black graciously offered to present an award at our New York City event to his long-time friend and fellow comedian, Richard Belzer. Belzer, like Black, has also been a long-time supporter of gun violence prevention efforts.

He is irreverent, he is cantankerous, he is explosively funny, and he points out the absurdities of those who fight against our issue. And whether he thinks of himself as one or not, Lewis Black is, a sensible gun law activist.
