Following Brady Center Exposé of Massive Federal Violations, NRA Board Member Resigns

"Gun Industry Watch is shining a bright light on the deadly dealers who poison our communities with illegal guns and the gun lobby's work in the halls of Congress to protect them. As the former Director of ATF, I know the truth needs to be told and Gun Industry Watch is telling it."
-- Rex Davis, Dir. ATF (ret.) 1966-78

Notorious lawbreaker and NRA Board Member Sandy Abrams has resigned from the NRA's Board of Directors, leaving in disgrace after the Brady Center's Gun Industry Watch program issued its report, Death Valley, exposing his gun shop's massive violations of federal gun laws. Abrams was re-elected to the NRA's Board three times despite his escalating lawlessness, most recently in 2005, after revelations that his shop was cited for more than 900 violations of federal gun laws.

The NRA vigorously defended Abrams, with NRA lawyers suing the government to restore his gun shop's license. Abrams' resignation came only after a Brady Center's Gun Industry Watch program issued its special report leading to television and front-page news coverage of Abrams' legal troubles.

The report Death Valley points out that Abrams' shop, Valley Gun, is one of the leading suppliers of crime guns in America, ranking 37th out of nearly 80,000 federally-licensed gun dealers nationwide in total crime guns traced to their stores.

In a further embarrassment to the NRA, on October 26, the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the NRA's attempt to restore Abrams' firearms license. George H. W. Bush-appointed Judge Paul Niemeyer wrote that Abrams "simply does not care about the legal requirements" of federal gun laws and that the government "meaningfully served the public safety" in shutting him down.

The NRA is supporting legislation, H.R. 5092, which would protect other lawbreaking gun dealers like Abrams.
