Brady Kicks Off Campaign Against Illegal Guns at N.Y. Event
Mayor Bloomberg joins supporters, Board members, and celebrities to launch our Campaign Against Illegal Guns and honor Jim Brady on the 25th anniversary of his shooting.
Kicking off our Campaign Against Illegal Guns, at a dinner hosted by Audrey and Danny Meyer at Eleven Madison Park, are (from left to right) Board of Trustee members Nick Brown and Michael Wolkowitz, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Brady Center/Campaign President Michael D. Barnes, Board of Trustee member Diane Weathers, and New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly.
During the cocktail reception, two of last year's New York City gala honorees, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly (left) and Jack Rudin (right), are joined by actor/comedian Richard Belzer (center), who has been a longtime and avid supporter.
Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg addresses the group at dinner. In his remarks, he declared gun violence a public health crisis that needs to be dealt with: "...as mayor, I have an obligation I think all of us do to stop the flow of illegal guns into those cities where guns are used by criminals," he said. Mayor Bloomberg has joined with mayors around the country to take on the proliferation of illegal gun trafficking.
Sarah and Jim Brady on Good Morning America on March 30, 2006, the 25th anniversary of the assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan and the shooting of Jim Brady. That evening they delivered a video message to the attendees at Eleven Madison Park. In their message, Sarah said, "Since that day, Jim and I have endured. And we have fought and fought hard. Some days have certainly been better than others. But as we look back today, we are proud and honored to have helped America make real progress with its gun violence problem."
