Washington, DC – The following statement was released today by Dan Gross, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. Gross attended and submitted testimony for the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, “What Should America Do About Gun Violence?”:“The Brady Campaign commends the Senate Judiciary Committee for taking on this issue so quickly and thoughtfully. We appreciate the sense of urgency they are bringing to the debate. We have worked closely with the President and Vice President on the comprehensive package of gun policy reforms, and we look forward to working with the leaders in Congress as they continue the debate. At the Brady Campaign, we truly believe that the time for action is now and that it’s up to us, working with the American public, to make it happen. We have communicated with every member of Congress, relaying the passionate sentiments we hear every single day from the hundreds of thousands of people coming to our organization asking how they can get involved. This hearing is the first step in what I know will be a sometimes difficult process, but we are committed to change because as a country, we are better than this.”Gross also submitted written testimony to the committee.Gross was accompanied by Sherialyn Byrdsong, a Gun Violence Prevention Advocate whose husband Ricky Byrdsong, was shot and killed as he was walking with his two children through their neighborhood in Skokie, Illinois. She also submitted written testimony to the committee.
The Brady Campaign is the nation's largest citizens' lobby to prevent gun violence. We represent the voice of the overwhelming majority of Americans who are tired of living with the constant tragedy of gun violence and are in favor of strong laws and policies that will save lives. We are the light that exposes politicians who are putting the American people at risk, empowering the American people to hold them accountable for decisions and actions that undermine public safety.
We are driven by the focused vision of a nation where all Americans are safe at home, at work, at school, and in our communities.
