Washington, DC – The following is a statement released today by Dan Gross, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence:
“Every American who cares about reducing gun violence should know that we made great progress today with Senator Schumer’s background check bill passing through the Senate Judiciary Committee; but this is just the beginning. We must continue to raise our voices in support of this and the other bills that will make this the safer nation we all want and deserve.
Requiring background checks on all gun sales will have immediate and lasting impact by keeping guns out of dangerous hands while upholding and strengthening the right of law abiding citizens to own guns.
Today is an important milestone in our effort to finish the work that was begun by Jim and Sarah Brady and the original Brady Law. So far, the background checks put in place with the Brady Law have stopped over two million criminals, domestic abusers, and other prohibited purchasers from buying guns. However, right now, an estimated 40% of all gun purchases in the U.S. are currently not subject to background checks, all because of glaring loopholes that allow guns to be sold at gun shows, over the Internet, through classifieds, and at flea markets without a background check. Expanding the Brady Law background checks to all gun sales would enable us to expand the effectiveness of this successful law and do a more thorough job in our goals of keeping guns out of the hands of dangerous people.
The American people overwhelmingly support background checks and all of the legislative actions being considered by the Senate, and we will work hard to hold our leaders accountable as the debate now moves to the full Senate.”
The Brady Campaign is the nation's largest citizens' lobby to prevent gun violence. We represent the voice of the overwhelming majority of Americans who are tired of living with the constant tragedy of gun violence and are in favor of strong laws and policies that will save lives. We are the light that exposes politicians who are putting the American people at risk, empowering the American people to hold them accountable for decisions and actions that undermine public safety.
We are driven by the focused vision of a nation where all Americans are safe at home, at work, at school, and in our communities.
