(Washington, DC)—The Brady Campaign and its twenty-five California Chapters today applauds the actions taken by the California State Senate, and for showing true leadership in passing reform to their state gun laws.  In passing comprehensive legislation known as the LIFE Act (Lifesaving Intelligent Firearms Enforcement), they are showing that once again, states are leading the way in making our communities safer.

The LIFE Act will decisively close loopholes in California's assault weapons law and reduce the proliferation of rapid-rate-of-fire weaponry. Other measures will help keep firearms and ammunition out of the hands of dangerous people.

“We thank the California State Senate for making our state a safer place, ”said Dr. Dallas M. Stout, President of the California Brady Campaign Chapters.  “The LIFE Act is a top priority of the California Brady Campaign Chapters and it will be critical to preventing gun violence.  We are proud that our state is leading the way when it comes to keeping our communities safe from gun violence.”California has the strongest laws in the nation but recent events nationwide, as well as tragic shootings in the state, have highlighted the need for legislation that keeps weapons and ammunition away from criminals and other dangerous people.

California continues to help lead the way when it comes to passing common sense gun laws, “ said Dan Gross, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.  “If the Assembly approves and Gov. Brown signs the LIFE Act, California will join Delaware, Colorado, Maryland, New York, and Connecticut in passing strong, comprehensive legislation in the wake of the Newtown shooting.  The actions take by these states will save lives and we applaud their leadership.  At the same time, we will continue to be the voice of the American people in Washington as we work towards passing expanded background checks on the federal level.”

The Brady Campaign calls on members of the California Assembly to pass the LIFE Act and send it to Gov. Brown's desk for his signature.

The mission of the Brady organization is to create a safer America for all of us that will lead to the dramatic reduction in gun deaths and injuries that we all seek.
