In the St. Petersburg Times, four of the five coaches they interviewed - including Coach Frank Beamer at Virginia Tech - enforce strict no-guns policies, some as a condition for playing on their teams:

Miami's Randy Shannon hasn't received a phone call from a single coaching brethren, a single athletic director, to chat about his zero-tolerance policy toward guns.

While his university bans its students from possessing legally owned guns on campus (not off of it, however) — a rule similarly imposed at Florida, Florida State and USF — the Hurricanes' second-year coach has gone a step further:

Have a gun and you're done.

The AP story is here.

This is from the New Orleans Times- Picayune:

Hornets reserve guard Rasual Butler was arrested Monday morning by Miami Beach Police and charged with carrying a concealed firearm without a permit and wrongful display of a firearm.

Butler was released from the Dade County Jail on Monday afternoon after posting $6,000 bail. According to the arrest report, police were dispatched after witnesses said a man holding a firearm had made threats.

Miami Beach Det. Juan Sanchez said when he arrived at the scene at 5 a.m., Butler, 29, was seated in the rear seat of a sport utility vehicle. When officers asked Butler if he had any weapons, he said, "No, but my gun is in the car."

An automatic [sic] gun that was cocked with a bullet in the chamber was found behind the seat on the floor board. Butler told police he had a concealed weapon's permit but not in Florida.

A witness told police that Butler began to argue with an unnamed man as they both walked from a nightclub in Miami Beach. Witnesses said Butler removed a firearm from his waistband, cocked it and pointed it at the man. A witness said when Butler pointed the weapon, everyone began to run.

Sanchez said when he advised Butler that he was under arrest, Butler told him: "I'm a professional athlete, but I didn't do anything wrong. Look, I'm not saying I didn't have the gun, but I didn't cock it back."

Another example of Brady background checks at work, this time in Pennsylvania.

Per the AP:

NORRISTOWN, Pa. - Authorities say former NBA player Aaron McKie tried to buy two guns despite being under a protection-from-abuse order.

Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Ferman says McKie failed to disclose the protection order when he applied to buy the guns in April.

She says McKie never got the guns because of the order. It was filed in Delaware County last year and is in effect until September.

This is getting ridiculous.

There are certain things people shouldn't do as a matter of course. Bringing a loaded gun to the airport in the post-9/11 world is near the top of the list.

Meanwhile, the gun lobby leads us to believe that concealed carry permit-holders are among the most responsible citizens in the country.

Reading the news each week indicates otherwise.

From the Tennessean:

Titans receiver Brandon Jones was arrested and issued a citation at Nashville International Airport on Friday for carrying a loaded .32 caliber gun in his baggage, an airport spokeswoman confirmed.

Jones was arrested about 11:40 a.m. on a misdemeanor citation of unlawful possession of a firearm.

He was released and allowed to board a flight to Phoenix.

Spokeswoman Mary Margaret Miller said the gun was loaded with seven rounds, but none was in the chamber. She said the Department of Public Safety, which is part of the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority, handled the arrest, charge and citation.

Jones issued a statement through agent Craig Domann:

“Today I was cited for carrying a handgun when going through security at Nashville International Airport. Obviously I did not know I was carrying my gun. This morning I grabbed a bag and placed my clothing in the bag, then rushed to the airport. I had forgotten that the last time I had used the bag was when I went target shooting.

“I fully cooperated with authorities who confiscated the handgun at the security gate. I have a license for the handgun and a permit for carrying one. Realizing that I was not intentionally carrying the handgun nor did I have any intention of harming anyone, I was allowed to board my airplane and continue my travels. I want to apologize for any embarrassment this might cause my family, the Titans organization or my teammates.â€

The Titans said they were aware of the developments but had no further comment.

Jones, a third-round pick by the Titans in 2005, had 21 receptions and two touchdowns last season.

From the Bladen Journal (North Carolina):

Seattle Supersonics player Chris Wilcox was arrested in Bladen County on weapons charges Saturday evening.

According to reports from the Bladen County Sheriff’s Department, Christopher Ray Wilcox, 25, who gave a local address of 439 High Orchard Road, Whiteville, was charged with two counts of carrying a concealed weapon. Also arrested on the same charges was Carlos Deandre Gathers, 27, of 1000 Sunset Terrace, Whiteville.

Both were taken into custody and transported to Bladen County Jail where they were booked on a $500 secured bond each.

Both have been released.
